de Atacama, el Observatorio Europeo Austral (ESO) est\u00e1 construyendo el mayor telescopio \u00f3ptico del mundo.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">No han perdido mucho tiempo en elegir un nombre: se llamar\u00e1\u00a0<b>Telescopio Extremadamente Grande o ELT<\/b>\u00a0(Extremely Large Telescope, en ingl\u00e9s).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Se ha invertido una enorme energ\u00eda en dise\u00f1ar y construir \u201cel mayor ojo del mundo en el cielo\u201d, que deber\u00eda empezar a registrar im\u00e1genes en 2028 y que muy probablemente ampliar\u00e1 nuestra comprensi\u00f3n del universo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Nada de esto ser\u00eda posible sin algunos de\u00a0<b>los espejos m\u00e1s avanzados jam\u00e1s fabricados<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"bbc-geybui\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Publicidad 2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-e2e=\"advertisement\"><\/section>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">La doctora Elise Vernet es especialista en \u00f3ptica adaptativa en ESO y ha estado supervisando el desarrollo de los cinco espejos gigantes que recoger\u00e1n y canalizar\u00e1n la luz hacia el equipo de medici\u00f3n del telescopio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Cada uno de los espejos a medida del ELT es una proeza del dise\u00f1o \u00f3ptico.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Vernet describe el\u00a0<b>espejo convexo M2<\/b>\u00a0de 4,25 m como \u201cuna obra de arte\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Pero quiz\u00e1 sean<b>\u00a0los espejos M1 y M4<\/b>\u00a0los que mejor expresan el nivel de complejidad y precisi\u00f3n requerido.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<h2 id=\"Los-espejos-M1-y-M4\" class=\"bbc-1f03ibc eglt09e0\" tabindex=\"-1\">Los espejos M1 y M4<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">El espejo primario, el M1, es el\u00a0<b>m\u00e1s grande jam\u00e1s fabricado<\/b>\u00a0<b>para un telescopio \u00f3ptico<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cMide 39 m de di\u00e1metro y est\u00e1 formado por 798 segmentos hexagonales alineados de forma que se comporta como un espejo monol\u00edtico perfecto\u201d, explica Vernet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">El M1 captar\u00e1\u00a0<b>100 millones de veces m\u00e1s luz que el ojo humano<\/b>\u00a0y deber\u00e1 ser capaz de mantener su posici\u00f3n y forma con una precisi\u00f3n fabricado y<b>\u00a0podr\u00e1 cambiar de forma 1.000 veces por segundo\u00a0<\/b>para corregir las turbulencias atmosf\u00e9ricas y las vibraciones del propio telescopio que, de otro modo, podr\u00edan distorsionar las im\u00e1genes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Su superficie flexible est\u00e1 formada por seis p\u00e9talos de un material vitrocer\u00e1mico de menos de 2 mm de grosor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Los p\u00e9talos fueron fabricados por Schott en Maguncia (Alemania) y enviados a la empresa de ingenier\u00eda Safran Reosc, a las afueras de Par\u00eds, donde se pulieron y ensamblaron para formar el espejo completo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Los cinco espejos est\u00e1n casi terminados y pronto ser\u00e1n cu\u00e1ntico<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Mientras que estos enormes espejos se utilizar\u00e1n para captar la luz del cosmos, los colegas del ESO en Garching, Alemania, en el Instituto Max Planck de \u00d3ptica Cu\u00e1ntica, han creado un\u00a0<b>espejo cu\u00e1ntico<\/b>\u00a0para operar a las escalas m\u00e1s diminutas imaginables.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">En 2020, un equipo de investigadores fue capaz de hacer que una sola capa de 200 \u00e1tomos alineados se comportara colectivamente para reflejar la luz, creando efectivamente\u00a0<b>un espejo tan peque\u00f1o que no se puede ver a simple vista<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">En 2023, lograron colocar un \u00fanico \u00e1tomo controlado microsc\u00f3picamente en el centro del conjunto para crear un \u201cinterruptor cu\u00e1ntico\u201d que puede utilizarse para controlar si los \u00e1tomos son transparentes o reflectantes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cLo que los te\u00f3ricos predijeron, y nosotros observamos experimentalmente, es que en estas estructuras ordenadas, una vez que se absorbe un fot\u00f3n y se vuelve a emitir, en realidad se emite [en una direcci\u00f3n predecible] y esto es lo que lo convierte en un espejo\u201d, explica el doctor Pascal Weckesser, investigador postdoctoral del instituto.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Esta capacidad de controlar la direcci\u00f3n de la luz reflejada por los \u00e1tomos podr\u00eda tener aplicaciones futuras en diversas tecnolog\u00edas cu\u00e1nticas como, por ejemplo, redes cu\u00e1nticas a prueba de piratas inform\u00e1ticos para almacenar y transmitir informaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"bbc-1qn0xuy\">\n<div class=\"bbc-18ywsw9\"><img fabrica espejos con otra propiedad extrema.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">La empresa de \u00f3ptica lleva a\u00f1os desarrollando\u00a0<b>un espejo ultraplano<\/b>\u00a0que se ha convertido en un componente clave de las m\u00e1quinas que imprimen chips inform\u00e1ticos, llamadas\u00a0<b>m\u00e1quinas de litograf\u00eda ultravioleta extrema, o EUV.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">La empresa holandesa ASML es el principal fabricante mundial de EUV, y los espejos de Zeiss son un componente esencial de las mismas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Los espejos EUV de Zeiss pueden reflejar la luz en longitudes de onda muy peque\u00f1as, lo que permite una claridad de imagen a escala diminuta, de modo que se pueden imprimir cada vez dir=\"ltr\">Esta superficie de espejo ultrasuave, combinada con los sistemas que controlan la posici\u00f3n del espejo, tambi\u00e9n fabricados por Zeiss, proporcionan un nivel de precisi\u00f3n equivalente a hacer rebotar la luz en un espejo EUV en la superficie de la Tierra y distinguir una pelota de golf en la Luna.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Aunque esos espejos puedan parecer ya extremos, Zeiss tiene planes de mejora para ayudar a fabricar chips inform\u00e1ticos a\u00fan m\u00e1s potentes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Tenemos ideas sobre c\u00f3mo seguir desarrollando las EUV. Para 2030,\u00a0<b>el objetivo es tener un microchip con un bill\u00f3n de transistores<\/b>. Hoy, quiz\u00e1 estemos en los 100.000 millones&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">Ese objetivo est\u00e1 m\u00e1s cerca con la \u00faltima tecnolog\u00eda de Zeiss, que permite imprimir unas tres veces m\u00e1s estructuras en la misma superficie que la actual generaci\u00f3n de m\u00e1quinas de fabricaci\u00f3n de chips.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bbc-19j92fr ebmt73l0\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p class=\"bbc-hhl7in e17g058b0\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;La industria de los semiconductores tiene esta hoja de ruta dominante y fuerte que proporciona un ritmo de tambores para todos los actores que contribuyen a la soluci\u00f3n.
